Timebreach

Preface

In this level, players step into the shoes of a strike team responding to a disaster caused by a close encounter with a meteor. The meteor has triggered space-time rifts, with one leading to a reality where the impending collision is frozen in time. Players must enter this alternate reality and activate three extraterrestrial defense satellites to destroy the meteor and prevent a catastrophe.

For this level, I wanted to try out the new camera devices that Fortnite recently introduced. So, I thought trying my hand at a top-down shooter would fit this level quite well. There are two ways one could play this. The first would be to find and unlock the exit, hereby ending the game after the exit has been entered. The other way is to go for a high score. Since the zombie horde gets stronger and faster over time, it's a challenge to see how long you can survive. I drew inspiration mainly from Dead Ops Arcade, a popular game mode in the Call of Duty Black Ops games.

The player starts in front of a few trucks they've just deployed from, equipped with a pistol that also includes a flashlight. From here, they can begin exploring wherever they like.

Creatures begin spawning almost instantly and head straight for the player. There are multiple spawners spread around the map, marked by the red capsules you see.

In the time breach, things aren't quite normal. Some objects, like the crashing plane and a couple of helicopters, are frozen in time. There are also zones with changed gravity that help the player get out of tight spots.

There's a special military point of interest housing one of the game's most powerful weapons: a minigun. It's also the most expensive weapon and is guarded by two sentries that open fire as soon as you approach. This small military base was humanity's first attempt to set up camp in the time breach, but all its human occupants were wiped out.

The main street marks the center of the map and serves as a reference point for the player to return to while exploring. Every other area of the map is accessible from here, with pieces of the crashing plane scattered along it.

The exit serves as an objective for players who want a goal to work towards. In this case, the exit costs 1000 gold to unlock, meaning the player has to eliminate 200 zombies, each dropping 5 gold.

The catch is that weapons also cost gold, but they can help the player achieve their goal of collecting 1000 gold faster. So the player has to make a choice: either buy a good weapon and lose some gold to farm zombies faster, or keep the gold and use their current weapon to get the necessary eliminations.

If you want to check out a more classic version of a Zombie mode I created, head over to my Voidwalker project, where I used Verse and npc_behavior to build a custom, round-based Zombies mode.
